Clutch replacement can be an expensive auto repair to have performed on your vehicle with pick-up trucks, SUV’s and some import vehicles usually being the most expensive. If you suspect you are in need of clutch repair service, keep reading to find out ways to save money and help make sure you get a quality repair.
What follows are some of the main symptoms of clutch problems:
- Clutch slippage on acceleration
- Clutch shudder or chatter while letting out the clutch
- Transmission not shifting correctly or hard to get into gear or grinding
- Clutch pedal is weak or goes to the floor
- Clutch pedal is hard to push
The symptoms of slippage, shudder, and hard transmission shifting usually relate to worn internal parts like the clutch pressure plate and clutch disc. The fix is to replace these components. During clutch replacement the pilot bearing and throw out bearing should always be replaced. These parts usually all come in a clutch parts kit.
Clutch pedal symptoms usually relate to failure of the master cylinder or slave cylinder. These problems are usually due to fluid leakage, internally or externally. The fix is to replace one or both components. It is possible to have a hydraulic line that is leaking rather than leakage from one of the two cylinders.
The reason clutch replacement may cost more on one vehicle than another has to do with the amount of labor time needed to remove and replace the clutch. Four-wheel drive pick-ups and SUV’s generally require the most labor hours to complete.
Another factor that influences the overall cost of clutch replacement relates to one component in particular, the flywheel. At minimum, the flywheel should be machined during clutch replacement. If the design of your vehicle’s flywheel or the degree of damage make machining impossible, it will need to be replaced. For example, some dual mass flywheels have multiple pieces and cannot be surfaced. Replacement costs for these can be as high as $1000.00.
As you talk with your repair shop about the problems your vehicle is having that may indicate clutch repair is needed, be sure to get a printed estimate. It is also important to verify that all clutch components in need of replacement are itemized on the parts list, including the flywheel and any hydraulic cylinders and hoses.
